South Korea Visa Overview

In order for a foreigner to enter the Republic of Korea, he or she must have a valid visa, and a visa is an entry permit issued by an immigration officer. When a visa holder enters the country, he or she will be subject to an entry inspection, and the purpose of the visa must be in accordance with the entry requirements. Please note that entry may be denied depending on the type of visa.

Types of South Korean Visas

South Korea visas are largely divided into single-entry and multiple-entry visas, and there are a total of 37 types of visas. Visas are broadly divided into four main categories.

1. Diplomatic and official visas

This category includes diplomatic visas (A-2), official visas (A-3), and agreement visas. These visas are issued to diplomatic and official personnel and their families.

2. Non-profit visa

These include short-term experience visas (C-3), temporary work visas, and short-term visitor visas. These visas generally allow stays of up to 90 days.

3. Residence qualification visa

This category includes the Medical Treatment Visa (C-4), the H-1B Work Visa, and the H-2 Visitor Work Visa. Each visa is issued for a specific activity or purpose, and there are some differences depending on the type of stay.

4. General Visa

This is the most common type of visa, and includes study-related visas (D-2, D-3), cultural and artistic visas (D-10), etc. Each visa is issued to foreigners who meet specific qualification requirements.

Types of employment visas

There are approximately 17 types of work visas that can be used to work in Korea, and I will explain the main types of visas.

1. Short-term work visa

A short-term work visa (C-4) is usually granted to foreign nationals who wish to work for a short period of time and meet certain eligibility requirements for the purpose of earning income.

2. E Series Visa

It includes various visas, from E-1 (professor visa) to E-7 (specified activity visa). E-2 visa is a foreign language education visa and is mainly used to teach foreign languages at professional educational institutions.

3. Non-professional work visa

The E-9 visa is a visa required for foreign workers to work through employment and is managed by the Employment Permit System. It mainly applies to non-professional occupations.

4. F Series Visa

This category includes F-2 (resident visa), F-4 (overseas Korean visa), etc. F-5 (permanent visa) allows long-term stay without restrictions and freedom of movement.

Things to consider when hiring foreigners

There are some things to keep in mind when hiring foreigners in South Korea.

  1. Foreigners may only engage in activities within the scope of their qualifications and period of stay, and political activities are subject to legal restrictions.
  2. You must work only with a designated work visa, and failure to comply with this may result in legal punishment.
  3. Illegal employment is strictly prohibited, and foreigners’ registration and residence status must be checked.
