Obligations and Procedures for Reporting Enrollment of International Students: Required Documents

Obligation and Procedures for Foreign Students to Report Enrollment in South Korea

When foreign students enroll in schools in South Korea, it’s essential to complete the enrollment reporting process. This requirement is set forth in Articles 47 and 49-2 of the Enforcement Rule of the Immigration Control Act.

1) Who Needs to Report

All foreigners aged between 6 and 18 with residence status are required to report their enrollment.

2) Information to Be Reported

It’s necessary to state which level of education you are attending, whether it be elementary, middle, or high school.

3) When to Report

  • Common Timeframe: Enrollment must be reported within 15 days of initial enrollment or any changes in attendance status (including progression to a higher level of education).
  • When Applying for Various Residence Permissions: Reporting is necessary in the following cases:
  • Foreign registration (address reporting)
  • Permit for change of residency status
  • Permit for allowing activities outside of the residency status
  • Permit for change or addition of employment
  • Permit for granting residency status
  • Application for the extension of stay

4) How to Report

To report enrollment, you must fill in the name of your school in the ‘enrollment status’ section of the Integrated Application Form when applying for various residency permits. You also need to submit supporting documents:

  • If currently enrolled: Provide proof of enrollment, such as a certificate of enrollment.
  • For those not yet attending school, indicate ‘not enrolled’ (there’s no need to input a school name).

5) What Happens if You Don’t Report?

Failing to report your enrollment could result in penalties regarding the extension of your residence permit under immigration law. This is particularly crucial for foreign students who wish to stay long-term, as adhering to the reporting deadlines is vital.
