Recognition of Foreign Mariners for Their Heroic Actions During the Gyeongbuk Wildfires
During the recent wildfires in Gyeongbuk, brave foreign sailors stepped up to assist residents, and in recognition of their remarkable contributions, three Indonesian seafarers have been granted the Special Contributor visa (F-2-16). This decision marks a significant acknowledgment of the selfless acts displayed by these individuals amidst a challenging situation.
A Sign of Devotion
On March 25, the wildfires rapidly spread across areas in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk, exacerbated by strong winds, making it difficult for residents to evacuate. During this crisis, three foreign sailors took it upon themselves to help evacuate vulnerable elderly individuals, risking their safety to carry them to nearby safe zones. Witnesses, including the village chief, have commended their bravery and commitment.
One of the sailors, Mr. S, has lived in the area for eight years while working as a foreign mariner. He gained the trust of the local community, which makes the recent development vital for him, as his chances of long-term residency in Korea had been uncertain. Now, with the granting of the F-2-16 visa, he can establish a stable life here, showcasing how essential contributions from foreigners can enrich local communities. On the same day, fellow sailors, Mr. L and Mr. B, also played crucial roles in assisting elderly residents and collaborating with marine rescue organizations. Mr. B further demonstrated his commitment by coordinating rescue operations late into the night, ensuring that isolated residents found safe passage.
The swift actions of these sailors not only saved lives but highlight the need to view foreign workers as valuable social partners, rather than just a labor force.
Ministry’s Review and Decision
This initiative took flight on April 1, following directives from the acts of the acting Minister of Justice, and was formalized through reports submitted to the Central Disaster Countermeasure Headquarters on April 5. The F-2-16 visa offers a pathway for long-term residency, aiding in establishing roots and a stable life in Korea. By providing institutional recognition for altruistic actions displayed during disasters, we can foster social justice and strengthen community bonds.
